The death of someone close to you can feel very overwhelming. Grief is a very personal experience, and you may feel a range of different emotions as you try to process what has happened. The pain of grief can also disrupt your physical health as you face one of life’s biggest challenges.
At Alex Willis Funeral Home, we are a local funeral director based in the Lancaster and Morecambe district. This month’s blog offers advice on how to cope with grief after losing a loved one. For more information, don’t hesitate to contact us.
What is Grief?
When someone close to you dies, you go through the process of grieving. The symptoms can be different in each person, and they can sometimes be difficult to understand.
There is no set amount of time that grief lasts. Whatever your loss, it is personal to you. Do not feel ashamed by how you feel. There are healthy ways to cope with the pain, and in time you will come to terms with your loss.
There is also no right or wrong way to grieve. How you do so depend on may factors. Healing happens gradually, and whatever your grief experience is, give yourself time.
Spend Time with People
Speak to your friends and family, tell them how you feel. This can help you feel less isolated. If you don’t have any close friends and family, or they are grieving too, there are several bereavement services you can contact through your GP.
Please also see our list of bereavement support.
Focus on Self Care
Don’t forget to prioritise your self-care by eating well, staying hydrated and getting rest. Simple acts of self-care can replenish your energy, benefiting your grieving process.
Celebrate Your Loved One’s Life
Keep your loved one’s memory alive by celebrating their life in any way you can. There are lots of meaningful ways to honour their memory.
Take it One Day at a Time
Don’t put pressure on yourself to return to your usual routine. Give yourself time and focus on what you need from day to day. Prioritise rest and activities that help you cope.
How Can I Support Others When I’m Grieving?
If you have lost someone close to you and your friends and family are grieving too, you may all have different coping mechanisms. Supporting someone else when you are grieving can be difficult. So, make sure you allow space for your own grief, and have other people you can talk to.
