Saying goodbye to a loved one is difficult and giving a eulogy in front of friends and family, who knew them too, can be overwhelming. There is no single correct way to write a eulogy. The most meaningful ones are usually personal and honest.

At Alex Willis Funeral Home, we are a local funeral director based in the Lancaster and Morecambe district. This month’s blog offers tips on how to write a eulogy. For further information with funeral arrangements, don’t hesitate to contact us.

What is a Eulogy?

A Eulogy is a speech given at a funeral. It is a loving way for someone close to the deceased to pay their respects during the ceremony. The eulogy will often tell stories from their life, share fond memories and say something meaningful.

Anyone can deliver a eulogy at a funeral service but is it usually someone who was very important to the person who died. If you find that your eulogy is too painful to deliver, the vicar or celebrant can read it out on your behalf.

How Do I Write a Eulogy?

Writing a eulogy can feel like a huge responsibility. Before you start, it is worth speaking to family and friends for suggestions and perspective. Bear in mind that there is no perfect way to write a eulogy.

Make notes on things you would like to include, such as:

  • Memories of times you spent together
  • Life achievements
  • Highlights
  • The impact they had on other people’s lives
  • Funny stories

A eulogy is a way to keep your loved one’s memory alive and putting one together can be emotional. Speak from the heart and don’t be afraid of shedding a tear or sharing laughter. A funeral is a celebration of life.

How Long Should a Eulogy Be?

Typically, a eulogy should be no more than 10 minutes long. Keep in mind the time allotted for the funeral service and other people giving speeches. Three to five minutes is a good length.

Once you have written your eulogy, be sure to practice it so you can determine whether it is length appropriate. It is also recommended you read it out to someone for feedback.
