Organising a funeral can be very overwhelming, especially when you’re grieving. When you lose a loved one, there is a lot to think about. Whether they have left a funeral plan or you need to arrange the funeral yourself, there are many aspects to consider when planning a celebration of life.

At Alex Willis Funeral Home, we are a local funeral director based in the Lancaster and Morecambe district. This month’s blog offers you advice for when it comes to arranging a funeral. For further information with funeral arrangements, don’t hesitate to contact us. We are here to help during this difficult time.

Contact a Funeral Director

Contacting a funeral director as soon as you can will help ease the stress of arranging a funeral. At Alex Willis Funeral Directors, we are members of the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD).

We are proud to provide the local areas of Lancaster and Morecambe with the care and support you need.

Register the Person’s Death

In England, you must register a death within 5 days of being contacted by the medical examiner. Once this is confirmed, the medical certificate will be sent to the register office. If a coroner is involved, you will need to wait until the coroner’s investigations are complete before the death can be registered.

The Funeral Service

The person who has passed away may have left instructions about the type of funeral they wanted. It is important to consider the wishes of your loved one. However, if they have not left instructions, you will need to arrange it on their behalf.

You will need to decide whether the funeral will be a burial or a cremation, and whether it will be an attended or unattended funeral. Planning the service can be stressful. However, as your funeral director, we can help you with as much or as little as you would like.

Some key areas to consider when planning a service include:

  • The type of funeral
  • Funeral service information
  • Selecting a coffin
  • Transportation
  • Funeral flowers
  • Pallbearers
  • Order of service

There are many ways to create a personalised and respectful funeral service. Please see cost information here.

Create a Notice

When a person dies, it often falls to next of kin to inform friends and family of the death. Once we arrange the funeral, we can help you arrange a funeral notice, to inform attendees where and when the service will be taking place.

Additionally, we can work with you to prepare an obituary announcement or acknowledgement for the local newspaper of your choice.

The Day of the Funeral

As your funeral director, we will make sure everything runs smoothly on the day of the funeral. We can help you with what you need to know. Furthermore, we will also be in touch with you afterwards with any final information.

At Alex Willis, we understand there is no time limit on grief. Therefore, we have several bereavement support contacts who can help you through these difficult times.
